UPDATE: Social Emotional Learning and Student Data Collection
UPDATE: Per CORA request, the only results provided were existing policy and soon to be implemented policies. The Superintendent was unable to provide any information as to where or how student data is stored.
Platte Canyon School district has launched their new School Board of Education approved Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at FMS this year known as BASE and an established program never approved by the School Board at DCES - Second Step. There are many components of both of these programs, both include implementation, instruction and data collection. BASE is currently in the implementation phase which involves "stakeholder" notification.
Second Step was purchased by the district in June of 2021*(pp 56) and has never followed the detailed implementation process** (Schmidt email) and has been in classes since at least September of 2021 *(pp 3). The first information provided to parents concerning Second Step was distributed to parents February of 2022 *(pp 39). As of October 2021 data collection was implemented at DCES and an informational letter was generated to acknowledge "assessments of any kind done on a child" *(pp 13). This letter was designed to be "vague but will create a paper trail" *(pp 13). DCES has been collecting SEL data for approximately a year "utilizing formats from Liz to track data" * (pp 13) and more recently the survey provided by ApertureED known as DESSa
It is unknown at this time where or how the survey/screener information is stored at Platte Canyon School District, this CORA request is pending. It is evident from the CORA requested documents that this program and information provided to parents is intentionally vague and not transparent.
